Skirt Refashion

Have you ever seen a skirt that you love and it fits perfectly? But it has a split that makes it a mini skirt because it is so long. Well I have and I have come up with a great way to refashion a skirt using Aleen’s Fabric Fusion. This is my favorite go to product when I want to quickly make a project that if it were sewn it might not turn out so good because of being unable to match the seams.
Ladies Retreat 11 099
All I did was cut a piece of fabric to the correct length and hem is using the Aleen’s Fabric Fusion and then using a few alligator clips to hold it in place and fold the hem of the split back and put a generous amount of adhesive on and adhere it down.
Ladies Retreat 11 096
I took extra care and made sure that the top part of the split was adhered securely as well as the bottom edges as these were where the most stress will be placed.
Ladies Retreat 11 095
Use the tip of the pen applicator on the Aleen’s Fabric Fusion to run a small bead of adhesive along the edge to insure a secure bond.

Back and Refreshed

I am back from a week at the beach. Our church has a Ladies' Retreat every September in Myrtle Beach, and this year I was blessed not only to attend the 3 day event but I was able to go down a couple of days early with my Best friend and another friend of ours and enjoy a little extra time of relaxation. I have come back renewed and ready to share some of the wonderful things that I have gleaned from our speaker for the retreat Sis. Wanda Chavis. She was such a blessing as well as all the other ladies that were there. We had 45 ladies in three condo/Townhouses It was such a great time of fellowship and taking time to renew ourselves in God.
We also went shopping (Anthropologie, Stine Mart) and ate at various places (P.F. Chang's, and All you can eat Crab Legs) , so we had a blast. Add in a few runs to Krispie Kream. Love the place. I really would love to be able to share the experience with you all . I have some great post planned for the next few weeks. I hope that you come back and check out the new tutorials that I have coming for the blog.

New Designs for Fall

I have been so busy making things for open house that I wanted to share what I have been working one. I postponed my open house by a couple of weeks to give me more time to have more products on hand.
This is a set that I played around with various findings and some ribbon to make it. I like the way it turned out. I made sure the edges did not fray by heating them gently with a flame. (Be careful not to put the flame too close out you will not have any ribbon left)

Vintage Buttons is also a great way to add color and pizzazz to an outfit. These items will be listed in my Etsy shop after the open house.

Shabby Fabrics Sponsor

Today I would like to showcase my second sponsor. It is Shabby Fabrics. Shabby Fabrics is an online fabric store and I would like to share some of my favorite items from the Shabby Fabrics Shop. You can check out there What's New Section for all the newest items in their shop.

The Jelly Rolls from Shabby Fabrics are very inspiring. They also make it very convenient to add ruffles to home decor items and fashion garments. I could really see some of these as ruffles added onto a few T-shirts for my daughters. Each of the Jelly Roll Bundles contain 40 strips of fabric that measure 2 1//2'' x 42". This is a great value and if sewn together as is you could make a small quilt measuring 80" x 42".

I would also like to share that when you make a purchase from Shabby Fabrics 2% of every purchase if donated to World Vision's Microfinance Loan Program.
I hope that you stop by and check out the great selection of items that Shabby Fabrics has to offer, and please let them know that you are visiting from here.

Ribbon Organization

DSC00601
I love ribbon even though I don't mention it much here. I have a thing for Hobby Lobby's Ribbon Sachets. They are bags of 15 strips of ribbon that are 2 yards each, for a total of 30 yards of assorted ribbon. The price only $1.99 per bag. My local Hobby Lobby has been out for weeks and just had gotten some in on a recent visit, so I had to pick up a couple or 3. They are such a good deal that I just couldn't pass them up. Look after the break for a great way of organizing your stash.

9-11 10 years later

I like most people can remember exactly where I was on 9/11/2001. I was home I had just turned on the Today Show as they were reporting that the first tower had been hit, and how it must be some awful accident. Then as we are watching the first tower on fire I was shocked as everyone else was when we saw another plane flying right toward the second tower. Then the reports came in that the Pentagon had been hit also. I know that I called everyone that I could think of in a very short time. I had a 11 month old little girl and I had just found out that I was expecting our second child a couple of days before this day. My husband was working in a high rise in downtown Atlanta and I was so worried that Atlanta might be next. During the times that I spoke to him during that day he told me that he could see military flying all around the Atlanta area, and could not see any normal plane activity. I know that we had a special prayer service at church the next night and held prayer services for the next few weeks. We donated blood, and helped in various drives that were going on at the time.

I look at my kids now and realize that they really do not know what happened that day because the schools really haven't talked about it like I feel they should. So this year I feel like they are old enough to learn about what happened. If you feel the same way you can find a lot of links to information for helping your children understand what happened that day.  Here is the link to CNN for families  to help explain the events.
We know that we have forever been changed be the events of that day, and we will never forget the people that died that day and all the families that were affected by the enormous loss that was felt that day, and we should keep them in our prayers today as they remember the ones that they lost on that horrible day.

Hard Questions

Sometimes we are faced with questions from our children that leave us speechless, and we don't have a clue how to answer them. This is very hard for me because I want them to always come to me for answers ans to be able to answer the questions that they throw my way. Like tonight Anastasia was talking about dealing with other children that like to pick on her and how they give her a hard time. "all the time". She wanted to know why I never told the other child's parents about the situation and never even "acted like it mattered". Well I had to think about that one for a little while because I didn't want here to think that I didn't care about her problems. I told her this: "I love you and I know that sometimes people can act mean and hurtful but they might not really be trying to be mean and hurtful. Sometimes they are just responding to the situation on the defensive and you might be taking it the wrong way. Second you asked why I don't go to their parents, It is because I do not want to cause trouble with their parents and I so I will let you try to learn and work things out for yourself." I was trying to teach her  the lesson that she has to try to work out the problems that she has in life on her own first ans then if it still is not working out she can come to me. I also wanted her to know that she needs to think about how she treats others and try to treat them like she wants to be treated and not react to the way that they are treating her. I wanted her to know that reacting is not the best choice but you should try to be the bigger person and treat them better than they are treating you. In the end I had her willing to try and be the bigger person in the situation and try to treat other people better than they treat her. I hope this lesson will stay with her and I know that it will probably have to be retaught again before it sticks like glue, but I am willing to try and keep up the effort to teach this lesson because it is such a valuable lesson to be learned. I also told here that if she does this it is proven to work and all she has to do is try and she might just make a better friend in the process.

Quilts for a Cause: Central Texas Wildfires

After the greater Austin, Texas area reached a new record of 75 days with triple digit temperatures and no rain, something epic was bound to happen. This past week several communities have had to evacuate their homes as over 180 wildfires have erupted. Over 1,000 homes have been destroyed presenting one of the most devastating wildfires in Texas history.

As people have lost their homes and families have lost everything it is time to help out. We want every child who lost everything to have a cozy quilt to sleep under. One simple, but real thing to help families get back on their feet. Families have lost everything, let us start to rebuild their lives with a quilt.

Heather from Modern Day Quilts is organizing this drive. She requests quilts to be at least 45” x 60”, although twin size bed quilts are encouraged.

Please ship quilts to:
Valli & Kim Quilt Shop, Attn: Wildfire Quilts
700 West Highway 290
Dripping Springs, TX 78620

If you have questions, please email Heather at moderndayquilts@gmail.com.
If you are in Austin, Heather will pick the quilt up, just send her an email at moderndayquilts@gmail.com.

Please reblog, retweet, spread the word!

This Week

DSC00518

I have been super busy the past few days getting ready for my  “A Southern Lady’s Designs” Open House. I have the glue gun burns to prove it. DSC00524

I haven’t counted them but I know that I have made a lot. They will be made into headbands, pins, and hair clips.

I have been cutting 2 1/2”  strips for so long that my hand hurt. I really could use an Accuquilt  Go! Baby at a time like this. The Go! 2 1/2” strip die would be so much help. I really love the Go! Ric-Rac die I have a great project that I can make with that one too. Another one of my favorites is the Go! Funky Flowers, This one would make a great layered flower for a pin or hair clip. I also think that it would be a beautiful applique on a skirt or shirt.
