Playing with color

Here is a couple of pages from my sketchbook where I have been playing around with color using one color palette. This palette has been a favorite one for a while now. No matter what the medium I am drawn to these colors.

December 19-22

I seem to be playing catch-up this month and I will probably be do it this way for the rest of the month. I had planned on posting these every day but with all the hustle and bustle and all the events that go on around Christmas I have been taking the pictures but not getting the pages done everyday. Even though I use the digital format and print at the end of the month I am really enjoying documenting this month and I hope to do it again during another month of the year and not just December each year. I really would love to do the project life next year and I don’t know if I will or not.

Fill a box of books

I love books and I always try to go to the Scholastic Book Fair Warehouse sale whenever they have them. Not all locations offer the “Fill a Box” but my local one does and so for only $24.99 you can fill a box with as many that will fit, the only catch is that the box much close.

Well it was a pretty good size box and I filled it I did. When I got up to try to repack it the lady told me that she had to repack it anyway so not to worry, It was way over the top. Here is my haul.

Sorry for the shadows. I waited to late in the day to get good pictures. In all I brought home over $300 worth of books for only $24.99.

Today I took the girls to the town square for Christmas pictures and They thought that I should be in them too. So I let Anastasia take the picture of Shae and I, then I let Shae take the picture of Me and Anastasia. Neither of them knew to shade the lens when taking a picture in bright sunlight but I love how each of them turned out. The marbles are on the page because Anastasia taught Shae how to multiply by using marbles as manipulatives using a organizer box with slots for the other number in the problem. It worked really well with her having a visual to picture the problem. They also found a ladybug and we very surprised it was still alive after the very cold night that we had last night.  .

Scrap Scarf Sewing Tutorial

This Scrap Scarf Sewing Tutorial is very easy to make with just the sewing scraps that you have on hand. All you need is a good handful of sewing scraps and a little bit of muslin and you are all set to make a great Scrap Scarf.
Scrap Scarf Sewing Tutorial Supplies:
2 pieces of muslin measuring 5” x 72” (if you buy 2 yards of fabric and rip in into 5 inch pieces you should be able to get 9 pieces from each cut)
A good hand-full of various scraps. Long and narrow ones work best.

Thread (color of your choice because you really want it to show)
A sewing machine
Step one:
If you have not already prepared your base fabric do so now. I prefer to rip my muslin because it adds to the scrap look of the scarf.
Step two: organize your scraps so that they are easy for your to pick up with out too much thought and so that they will be random.
Step 3: Begin to sew them down the length of one piece of the base fabric. You can use a straight stitch or one of the many decorative stitches that are on most sewing machines. You could also just use a simple ziz-zag stitch.
Repeat step 3 going up and down the length of the base fabric until you are happy with the way it looks. (Note: I left a space of 1/4” inch between each row of scraps.)

Step 4:
Once you have finished sewing all the scraps down on the first base fabric, line up the second piece on the back with wrong sides together , you can pin to together at this point but I don’t bother with pinning.
With a medium stitch length sew around the edges about 1/4” in from the sides. I them used the same stitch length and sewed an extra large zig-zag pattern down the center of the finished scarf.

You can leave it just the way it is or your can add come embellishments to it.

I have some vintage bias tape in my stash and I found one that matched my thread and decided to ruffle it. (To ruffle it all you have to do is set your machine to the longest stitch length and the tension to the highest setting and it will ruffle itself.)

then I pinned it down in a shape that I liked and sewed over it with a very small stitch length.

Color Inspiration

I am very inspired by color and I wanted to share a color inspiration tray that I have put together.

All I did was go around my studio and pull things that I thought would love good together, the only rule was that the colors go to together. I just played with picking a but of things that I would never put together because of what they are made of but if I just look at color they go together great.

I was inspired to create these by this post by Traci Bautista.

Daily December Day 6

Today started out to be a stay at home day but turned into running around town for a couple of hours. When I got back home I realized that I hadn’t taken any pictures. So I decide to draw one of my favorite ornaments to tell the story of it. Well when I sat down to write I could not remember where we purchased it at but I know that we have had it for more than just a few years.
