Nook/Kindle Cover Tutorial

DSC05727
This is a very easy thing to make. All you need to do is have a little bit of fabric, a hot glue gun and some inspiration.  Supply list and full tutorial after the jump. This can be adapted for a Kindle also.

Supplies:
  • Fabric (a fat quarter will do)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • An Old Hard Back Book (you will be taking out the pages)
  • Coordinating Ribbon
  • An Elastic Headband (or piece of thin elastic)

Step One: Find a hardcover book that is at least 1/4” bigger all around that your Nook, and at least 3/4” thick.

Step Two: Remover the inside pages and open flat.

Step 3: Choose you fabric. Any fabric will do as long as it is not too thin. The fabric that I choose for this is a piece from my stash. It is a discontinued pattern from Robert Kauffman Fabrics. I choose it because it is a large weave canvas fabric that is upholstery weight.

Step 4: Using the book cover as a guide cut out a piece of fabric that is at least 3/4” larger on all sides. This will give you enough to overlap and glue to the inside of the book.

Step 5: place a generous amount of hot glue around the edge of the outside of the book cover and adhere to the wrong side of the fabric .

Step 6: (Sorry a better picture of this step is missing) Fold the fabric over to the inside of the cover and glue down with your hot glue gun. Miter the corners as if you were wrapping a package.

Step 7: Cut out a piece of fabric 1/4” smaller on all sides that the book cover and adhere with the right side facing out. as show above.

Step 8: Will a bout 2 –3 yards of ribbon,(working from the roll to keep it neater) Work your way gluing as you go around the edge of the inside fabric covering up the raw edge.

When you come to a corner work it to complete a miter.

When you get back around to the beginning fold the ribbon over itself to conceal the raw edge to keep it from fraying. By doing this creating a miter on the last corner.

Here is the cover finished to this step. Now we will complete The inside to hold your Nook in place.
DSC05715DSC05716
You will need 3 pieces of ribbon for this and they will vary in size. You will need to measure as you go to get to correct sizes. Along the top of the Nook will be one long piece that is glued on both sides to create a place for it to slide in.  You want to make sure that the fit fairly snug  but allow it to slide in and out when you need it to.

Along the bottom there are 2 pieces that are placed at an angle to support the bottom of the Nook and keep it from slipping out the bottom of the case when reading. DSC05719
Here is what the finished inside looks like.

For this step you will need a wide piece of elastic or a headband. This is for the closure. I used added this step after the fact because I knew that the Nook would slide out if not.
DSC05720
Center the Headband and using hot glue adhere it on the metal clasp.
DSC05722DSC05724DSC05723
Using a small piece of ribbon folding the ends over to stop the fraying use this piece to cover the metal seam

Here is how the placement for the back of the ribbon.

Thank you for posting these instructions. I made a cover today for my tablet and it was really easy by following each of your steps.

Look forward to reading back over some of your other projects!

Awww, look how clever you are! I'm a nook owner, using the ugly grey store-bought cover. I am bookmarking this tute. Using an existing book for the base is genius!
You've made a follower out of me!
Best,
